Resort and Lodging Guide

The Hawaii accommodation styles vary as you move around the island. If you are spending more than a few days on the Big Island, it might make sense to have two bases - one on the Windward side and one on the Leeward side.

The most exclusive resorts on the Big Island of Hawaii are located in the three enclaves in South Kohala: Mauna Kea, Mauna Lanai, and Waikoloa.

For those who prefer to have a “home away from home” alternative to a Hawaii hotel, the Big Island also has many condos that vacationers can rent for short periods. These condos are often privately owned and run by management companies. As the condos are generally new, spacious, and have access to swimming pools, these accommodations are well-suited for families. Condos are located throughout the Kailua-Kona area, from South Kohala down to South Kona.

Hilo is not a major resort destination in Hawaii. There are, however, hotels there, and the quality level ranges from budget to high-end. Regardless of the quality, Hawaii hotels are relatively reasonably priced in Hilo.

Given that full days are recommended for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park excursions, and that you may want to view the lava flows at night, finding accommodations near the park is often helpful. The choices, however, are limited. The nearby town of Volcano has dozens of bed and breakfast establishments (B&Bs), and it is best to rely on visitor reports in selecting a good one. Prices are generally higher than other B&Bs on the Hawaii Big Island.

The only non-camping option for staying in the park itself is the historic Volcano House on the rim of the Kilauea Caldera. It is quite well-located and its history goes back 160 years to the times of Mark Twain, who stayed there.

If none of these options suit you park goers, staying in Hilo may be preferable. It will only add about 20 minutes to the morning and evening “commute,” and the price will give you more value for your accommodation dollar.
Furthermore, in Hilo you will have access to the only city on the island.

The cheapest option, of course, is to “rough it” at one of the campsites in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Campsites can also be found in some state and county parks, many of which are located on the beach.
