Things to do / Travel Guide
You expect big golf on the Big Island of Hawaii, and you get it, lots of it.
Beginning at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Golf Club, you'll get panoramic views the snow-capped Mauna Kea, rugged lava beds, and the sparkling, blue Pacific Ocean. There's plenty of variety, including many elevation changes. Oh, and did we mention the third hole? You'll have to hit the ball over the ocean to reach the green.
And that's just for starters. At the Mauna Lani North Course you'll find yourself golfing at the bottom of a deep lava bowl and watching herds of goats wandering the course. Yes, there's lot's of see. But this course is tough, so pay attention.
And then there are the pot bunkers at the Waikoloa Beach Resort Kings Course. That's right -you'll even find a Scottish links-style course here amid the towering volcanoes, and ancient lava flows.
The Big Island Country Club offers another kind of treat: this mountain course is also a nature sanctuary, featuring over 2,000 types of vegetation. And if that's not enough, there's even an island hole that plays a bit tricky depending on the speed and direction of the wind.
And while we're on the subject of big, the over 7,000 yard long Hualalai is surrounded by lava flows that engulf it like a wild river. You'll also see surf breaking just beyond the back of a green, as well as an enormous double-green and a sand bunker running down the entire side of a fairway.
Like we said - BIG!
