Things to do / Travel Guide
The overwhelming majority of tourists to the Big Island arrive by plane. The major international airport on the Big Island is Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA). That is where you will arrive if you fly in from the mainland.
Planes also fly nonstop to and from the Big Island via Hilo International Airport (ITO), which only serves the neighboring islands.
When planning a trip involving more than one Hawaiian island, consider using one Big Island airport as the entry point and the other as the departure point. The car rental companies generally will agree to this type of arrangement. Depending on a tourist's particular itinerary, this will potentially save up to 2-3 hours of backtracking.
Hilo and Kona are ports of call for the major Hawaiian cruises, but there is no regularly scheduled boat transportation to or from the other Hawaiian islands.
