Geography of Hilo, Kona, Volcano, Big Island of Hawaii

Things to do / Travel Guide

Hawaii is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands. So as not to confuse it with the other islands in the chain, it is called the Big Island. It is twice as large as all of the other islands put together and it is located the farthest south and east of them all.

The Big Island is the “youngest” member of the island chain, approximately 800,000 years “young.” It still grows in surface area when lava flows from the Puu Oo vent on Kilauea into the ocean, creating new land.

Besides Kilauea, four other volcanoes comprise the land mass of the island. Mauna Kea, at 13,796 feet high, is considered the world's tallest mountain when measured from its base, almost 20,000 feet below sea level on the Pacific Ocean floor. Another volcano, Mauna Loa, has a very distinctive wide shape and boasts the largest mountain mass on earth.
