Things to do / Travel Guide
Kids will enjoy a vacation to the Big Island for many of the same reasons adults will, so long as their needs are considered.
The resorts of North Kona and South Kohala can offer kids a Disney-like experience on a smaller scale. It is best to choose a resort with more than one pool and water slide that also offers dolphin swims, other child-friendly entertainment, and a themed environment.
Seeing and visiting an active volcano in person is a vacation idea that kids will remember for a long time. For this, you should choose hikes in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park that match your family's endurance abilities. The Thurston Lava Tube hike is recommended. It is shaded and it combines a jungle and cave exploring adventure. There are many other short and interesting trails in the park as well. It is currently not recommended to take young children on the long, hot unmarked hikes to the active lava flows.
Most children will enjoy a petroglyph hunt, as the goal is to find them and then figure out what they depict. There are thousands of petroglyphs to explore in some very accessible locations around the island.
Even if your children have never snorkeled before, you can take them to a snorkeling site suitable for beginners. At these sites, kids can wade into the water, stick their goggled faces in, and feel like they're inside a tropical fish paradise.
Another kid-friendly activity is looking for whales, even if they have already migrated to Alaska for the summer. The more imaginative members of the family will find them anyhow! What they're probably seeing are dolphins or some of the whales that reside around Hawaii all year round.
The Big Island is just that, big. As such, families with small children should take care to strike a balance between driving excursions and spending time at a home base. It is thus recommended that families stick to short trips that do not require lots of driving. Furthermore, it is important not to get too obsessive about a single type of attraction. One heiau, for example, is enough. The Big Island has so much variety that you should have no problem doing a few different things every day.
