Botanical Gardens in Hilo, Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii

Given Hilo's status as the rainiest city in the United States, there are naturally some very pretty tropical gardens nearby.

Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is located 8½ miles north of Hilo at Onomea Bay. Nature trails meander through a true tropical rainforest, crossing bubbling streams, passing several beautiful waterfalls and the exciting ocean vistas along the rugged Pacific coast. More than 2,000 species of plants are preserved here.

The Hilo Arboretum, about a mile from downtown, encompasses 20 acres containing 1,000 species of trees. Admission to the site is free and visitors are allowed to pick fruit from the trees.

Nani Mau Gardens can best be described as “a floral theme park.
” It includes formal gardens and focuses on flowering plants. The Gardens are located three miles south of Hilo.

Liliuokalani Gardens is a large, formal Japanese garden in Hilo. Admission is free.

The Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary contains unique plant life in a 70-acre protected environment. Guided tours of the sanctuary are available by appointment only and, at approximately $100 per person, are quite expensive. Of note, tours will be limited in size to small groups.
