Things to do / Travel Guide
The Big Island of Hawaii's tropical climate is perfect for growing coffee beans and macadamia nuts. On factory tours around the island you'll see firsthand how the rich soil, full of minerals from underground volcanic activity, assists in the cultivation of beans and nuts.
Factory Tours on Hawaii's Windward Coast
Watch in wonder as Hawaii's world-famous macadamia nuts are processed, roasted, and packaged at Mauna Loa, the largest macadamia nut factory in the world. Located on the east side of the Big Island, in Hilo, after a free self-guided tour of the factory and agricultural premises, you'll be able to taste the products and purchase some tasty nuts to take home and share with your family and friends.
And if nature's candies don't quite hit the mark with you, some candies of the artificially-sweetened variety await you at Big Island Candies. During this free factory tour you'll be able to taste some complimentary Kona coffee, chocolate, and cookie samples - yum!
Coffee Plantation Tours on Hawaii's Leeward Coast
Coffee is the name of the game on the leeward side of the Big Island. Located in close proximity to one another, you can enjoy free factory tours of both the Holualoa Kona Coffee Company and the Ueshima Coffee Company. During your walk-through of the grounds, you'll learn about the history, growing, processing, and grading of one of the Aloha State's largest exports. See Kona coffee grown, harvested, roasted, processed, and packaged. You'll also be able to create your own custom brew, which you can buy and take home to enjoy, leaving a great Hawaiian taste in your mouth for a while to come. As you won't find coffee beans grown anywhere else in the United States, these tours are sure worth taking!
Behind-the-scenes and factory tours are typically family-friendly activities good for a short and interesting diversion from a region's mainstream tourist activities. Generally inexpensive, visitors are often given complimentary tastes and samples, like the delicious chocolate and cookie samples you get as you enter Big Island Candies.
