Arts and Entertainment in Hilo, Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii

Things to do / Travel Guide

The entertainment scene on the Big Island is limited, but there are a few enjoyable options, many of which target tourists.

The South Kohala and North Kona resorts feature hotel bars, hula dancing shows, luaus, and Polynesian shows, while, occasionally, there is also occasional live Hawaiian music. The luau at Kona Village Resort is considered to be the best and the Hilton Waikoloa Village features live music nightly.

If you're in Kailua-Kona, there is a relatively lively bar scene on Alii Drive with live music and dancing.

Puna is the site for drum circles, full moon parties, raves, and other informally organized local events. If you're up for trying something very different, an evening of cowboys and stargazing, make your way to the Kahua Ranch in North Kohala. This is prime ranching territory, with a Paniolo (Hawaiian Cowboy) tradition that goes back 200 years. At the Kahua Ranch, you can enjoy a ranch-style barbeque followed by Paniolo entertainment and stargazing. Call for more details.

In Hilo, you'll find a few bars scattered about, but none of them are really noteworthy.

If you're looking for something a bit quieter, then an unforgettable “nightlife” experience on the Big Island may be to simply watch the sunset. Be sure to look out for the green flash (seen immediately after the sun sets, due to unique atmospheric conditions in Hawaii). Some of the more popular locations for catching sunset are the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai and Anaehoomalu Beach Park (a.k.a., A Bay).

The 7 a.m. Suisan Fish Auction (at Banyan Drive and Lihiwai, in Hilo) provides early morning entertainment for people who want to get a jump-start on their days.
