Our History Buff Says:

If you like history and a little bit of mystery, a visit to the great Medicine Wheel in Wyoming's Bighorn County will provide a little bit of both. The site, located in the Bighorn National Forest on the western peak of Medicine Mountain, hosts a 75-foot diameter circle of limestone slabs and boulders with a purpose and origin that can not be confirmed, but is often attributed to an ancient Native American tribe of sun worshiping people. The circle of stone has a circumference of 245 feet. There are 28 spokes that connect its outer rim to its center where a round pile of stones about 3 feet high serve as a hub. The hub supposedly symbolizes a sun, and the spokes indicate 28 days of the lunar month. The wheel is part of a larger complex of archeological sites that show 7,000 years of Native American use and adaptation, including ceremonial staging areas, plant gathering areas, and altars – making the wheel and the surrounding area one of the best preserved and important ancient Native American sacred site complexes in North America.
