Our History Buff Says:

When gold was discovered in 1862, prospectors and businessmen rushed to the town of Bannack hoping to strike it rich. It was the territorial capital of Montana for a time, but gold findings dwindled and most people moved on. Today Old Bannack is a ghost town that has been preserved as a state park. Visitors can stroll down the old dusty streets of the town and eye more than 60 decaying buildings, many of which can be explored. They aren't restored, giving you a taste of the tough times of frontier life. Visitors will also find a replica of the gallows where the sheriff of Bannack and his henchmen were hanged in 1864 for killing more than 100 travelers that passed through the territory.
