Looking for an adventurous winter holiday? Yellowstone's two million plus acres are beckoning. Wintertime Yellowstone is an adventure traveler's dream come true. Unimaginable escapades await those who enter the park, whether for a day's worth of fun or a week's stay. Amongst these innumerable adventures are the miles upon miles of cross-country trails crisscrossing the beautiful park.
It's quite a drive from the park gates to the beautiful trails of Yellowstone National Park, but the breath-taking winter vistas you'll encounter there is well worth the effort. The trails are divided into the Mammoth Trails and the Old Faithful Trails, all of which are listed in a series of pamphlets available at the visitors' centers and the local hotels. If you're looking for some backcountry skiing, consider that few, if any, of the backcountry trails in the park are suitable for skiing. However, if you're willing to take the risk, make sure to take along experienced friends and plenty of directional equipment.
In addition to the fantastic skiing in the park, there is an abundance of other activities for visitors. You can snowmobile around the park's hot springs, or go snowshoeing on Yellowstone's various paths. Snow coach tours go through the park, reminding one of an, albeit snowy, African Safari. Guests can snap pictures of bison, elk, and wolf packs from the warmth of their coach. The nights are just as beautiful with extraordinary starry views. Coach rides are also available at night and, despite the eerie night air, that's when one truly discovers how alive Yellowstone National Park really is.
All dining and accommodation within Yellowstone's boundaries are offered through Xanterra Parks & Resorts. There are a wide variety of lodging choices including cabins, lodges, and even luxury hotel rooms. Many of the lodging options offered are all-inclusive packages as other dining options are relatively far away in the park's gateway communities. For those uninterested in spending the night in the park, however, these communities offer a variety of lodging options as well.
