With thousands of acres of prairies and grasslands, Thunder Basin National Grassland offers a unique set of recreational and sightseeing opportunities for the whole family.
Located in Northeastern Wyoming in the Powder River Basin between the Big Horn Mountains and the Black Hills, the Grassland provides unique opportunities for recreation, including hiking, sightseeing, hunting and fishing. The Grassland abounds with wildlife year-round, provides forage for livestock, and is underlain with vast mineral resources. Bird-watchers especially love the Thunder Basin National Grassland area, as there are over 200 species of birds found here. There are many different habitats here too, such as Ponderosa forests, scoria outcrops, sagebrush fields, grasslands and a few wetland areas that provide home for loons, ducks, geese, pelicans, herons, grebes, vultures, hawks, turkey, grouse, cranes and many more. There are no developed campsites, and although camping is allowed you must be careful to camp only in public grounds.
The Thunder Basin National Grassland is located in Northeastern Wyoming in the Powder River Basin between the Bighorn Mountains and the Black Hills, so pack up your gear and come on down!
