With almost 2.5 million acres of raw and rugged country, Shoshone National Forest promises visitors an unforgettable outdoor adventure.
A cornerstone of the Rockies, Shoshone National Forest boasts native cultures of the past, road less wilderness and untrammeled wildlife habitat which promise classic outdoor experiences for all. Running south and east from a border it shares with Yellowstone National Park's eastern edge, the forest's alpine heights are drained by rivers which are perfect for fly anglers and whitewater paddlers. The backcountry of canyons, lodge pole forests, alpine meadows, high-mountain tarns and riparian wetlands are full of pristine and rugged nature making the area one of the greatest places to enjoy the great outdoors.
Hikers, climbers, paddlers, mountain bikers and horseback riders will find fulfillment at Shoshone National Forest with its timberline lakes, mountain streams and deep Clarks Fork Canyon as well as the over 300 miles of trails. There are also thousands of acres of off trail riding on the Beartooth Mountains which boast 70 miles of trails for guests to enjoy. And if that's not enough, why not go backpacking, picnicking, skiing or snowmobiling?
If you want to enjoy a longer stay at Shoshone National Forest, take advantage of 31 primitive and developed camping sites which offer the best scenery and solitude. With Yellowstone National Park on its western border, the Shoshone encompasses the area from the Montana state line south to Lander, Wyoming.
