From rugged mountains to fertile valleys, to raging rivers and a diversity of wildlife, Caribou-Targhee promises an adventure in nature together with the solitude and scenery you've been looking for!
Combined, Caribou and Targhee National Forests cover more than 2.8 million acres of semi-desert, timbered highlands, 10,000 foot peaks, lakes, waterfalls, and wild wilderness. The crystal clear water, breathtaking vistas, rolling fields of golden grain and dark green potato plants, create a variety of topography and recreational opportunities to go along. Visitors can water ski on the Palisades Reservoir, float down the Buffalo River, and even go tubing in the Forest's natural beauty.
Caribou-Targhee National Forest boasts the first National Recreation Water Trail established by the Forest Service, and a five-mile float on calm water, where many species of wildlife can be seen, including the black bear, coyote, elk, deer, trumpeter swan, bald eagle, antelope, big horn sheep, and mountain goats. With all of this as well as hiking, swimming, canoeing and horseback riding, who could ask for more? And if you do want more time here to enjoy all the activity, rent a rustic cabin and enjoy woodcutting, a popular family outing, which starts early in the summer and continues through the fall.
