A monument to one of the earliest manifestations of America's celebrity culture, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center is a complex of 5 museums displaying artifacts and art of the American West. The museum features western articles and historical items that tell the story of W. F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody's life. The Plains Indians Museum features exhibits related to the culture and people of Wyoming's Native American tribes, boasting a large collection of artifacts and informative exhibits including cradleboards, ceremonial dresses and robes, pipes, and beadwork. For those looking for a bit of culture, the Whitney Gallery of Western Art features original paintings and sculptures by painter and sculptor Frederic Remington, and a life-size replica of the home in which he did most of his artwork.
The Cody Firearms Museum houses the most comprehensive collection of American firearms in the world, ranging from a 16th century hand cannon to guns of modern manufacture. And don't miss the most recent addition to the Historical Center, the Draper Museum of Natural History, the first American natural history museum to be opened in the 21st century. The Buffalo Bill Historical Center also features rotating special exhibitions, and its research library is an unparalleled resource for all things Western.
When planning your visit to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, expect to spend anywhere between two hours to two days, depending on just how deep your interest lies, and first visit the exhibitions or galleries that the youngest children want to see.
To get to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center: When you reach Cody - from the east or west - Highway 14/16/20 rounds into Sheridan Ave. From the north on Highway 14A (Bighorn Ave.) turn right onto Sheridan Ave. The Buffalo Bill Historical center is located at 720 Sheridan Ave.
From Buffalo Bill Historical Center:
The collections of the Buffalo Bill Museum interpret the history of the American cowboy, dude ranching, Western conservation, frontier entrepreneurship and, perhaps most importantly, the source of our concepts about the West.
