Butte, Montana
Boasting the largest National Historic Landmark District in the United States, visitors to uptown Butte, Montana will have no problem finding sites worthy of earning the title of historic charm. The head frames of hundreds of mines can be seen all over the town, and the uptown historic district features over 4,000 structures, many preserved and restored. These include many of the country's first tall buildings, elegant mansions, Victorian homes, boarding houses and hotels, and miner's cottages that housed 100,000 people. The town also hosts hundreds of saloons and even a red-light district, reminiscent of the town's copper-boomtown glory in the early 1900s. For more than a century, copper mining ruled Butte, and the city was considered one of the world's most important sources of that metal. The wealth generated by its mining past earned Butte the nickname of "The Richest Hill on Earth."
