Get a glimpse of what life was like out on the Montana range in the heart of a cattle empire. The frontier home of Canadian cattle rancher Johnny Grant and the cattle baron who bought it from him in 1866, Conrad Kohrs, is a model of 19th-century elegance. The home stands excellently intact with all the original furnishings, many of which were imported from Chicago and St. Louis, preserved. The ranch land has been reduced to 1,500 acres from its original 25,000, but the bunkhouse, stables, barns, sheds and workshops all remain, some dating back as far as the 1860s. Tours of the main house are lead by park rangers, and visitors can explore the 13 other buildings and over 80 historic structures on the premises on a self guided tour. Today, the site is still a working cattle ranch and a variety of activities are offered throughout the year. Grant-Kohrs Ranch is located directly off I-90 between Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park in Deer Lodge, Montana, not too far from Butte.
