Snorkeling in Yellowstone and Grand Teton Lakes
The many lakes and reservoirs in the Yellowstone region make for excellent water adventures – of both the above-water and underwater variety. For those who want to see a bit more than what typical swimming allows, but aren't quite ready to take the plunge into the diving depths, snorkeling is a great option. Some of the region's most popular swimming and diving spots are also excellent sites for snorkeling. Depending on the site, visitors may glimpse some of the trout that make Greater Yellowstone the fishing Mecca that it is. Swimming is allowed in all park lakes, although the water can get rather chilly. Jenny, String, and Leigh Lakes in Grand Teton National Park have pleasant swimming and snorkeling sites on the east side with some sandy or gravel beaches. Visitors can bring their own equipment, or rent from Billings and Bozeman based scuba companies. Some other popular spots include Spring Meadow Lake near Helena and the reservoir at Big Horn National Recreation Area.
