Things to do / Travel Guide
Sometimes the perfect romantic vacation spot is right around the corner. Other times it's in the middle of a big city with lots of bright lights and sounds. However, if you're looking for a vacation to get far away from it all, in the middle of a wilderness of fantastic views, then a getaway in the greater Yellowstone area is a perfect idea. Yellowstone and its surroundings is a rugged region, and the romance options combine the best of ruggedness and warmth.
Hiking and sightseeing are the area's major attractions, but there are also other entertainment options in the region's picturesque local cities such as Jackson and Cody. Hundreds of artists call these two cities home and, as a result, the town has become a hub for the regional Western arts. Snatch up their latest greatest pieces at great prices, or just wander the downtown areas and be astonished at how laid back they are. In wintertime this is snow central, with people coming from far and wide specially to ski the area's slopes, making it a great destination for a romantic ski trip; Jackson Hole, in particular, boasts fun après ski scenes. Its main streets are filled with perfect places to enjoy a hot chocolate.
A Romantic Vacation in Jackson Hole
Just outside Jackson's sister-city, Wilson, travel up the aptly-named Heck of a Hill Road to get to the also aptly-named Teton Tree House. It's the closest to a tree house you'll have been in since you were a kid, but this one is a lot sturdier. Instead of your mother bringing you milk and cookies, the innkeepers here serve up healthy breads, hot porridges, granola, and fruits for breakfast. The premises are made entirely of wood and adobe, and the whole place glows. The maze of decks is a great place to wander around and catch stunning views. When you want a little time alone to yourselves you're sure to love the secluded outdoor hot tub.
There's plenty to eat in the area aside from trail food. Venture into Jackson, and discover dozens of suitable restaurants. Of course, this is cattle country, so it's only right to treat yourselves to a steak or a thick bison burger. There's no ocean around (though Yellowstone Lake is mighty large), but the seafood restaurants are also a hit. Mangy Moose Saloon and Restaurant is a good place to start. Stick around for the after meal drinks like margaritas and tequila – this isn't called a saloon for nothing.
In the summer, the outdoors beckon to the romantic spirit. Just take a short drive from Jackson, and you're in Grand Teton National Park. Park at Colter Bay Village, on Jackson Lake, rent yourselves a boat, and be awed by the vertical views of the Grand Tetons. In the winter there's skiing all over the region. Enjoy your time on the slopes, and then head over to the Mangy Moose Saloon, in Jackson, for the best in après ski.
A Romantic Getaway in Cody
The Wild West still lives in Cody, the Rodeo Capitol of the World, and you're fortunate if there's a rodeo in town during your visit. Stay outside town (pretty hard not to, considering the town's size) at the K3 Ranch House. Everything here is made of wood, strong, gnarled, and shapely. The style is intentionally unpolished, with huge exposed girder logs. Yep, this is the real thing.
Before there was ever such a thing as the back seat of a car, there was the bed of a wagon. At the K3, they've brought the wagon into one of the guest rooms and put a queen-size bed in it, to give you an exclusively Western experience. Before bed, sit around and enjoy the vintage gas fireplace. Wake up to antelope, deer, or horses running past your window.
Here in Cody you're in cattle country and are likely looking to eat a meaty treat. There's a fantastic selection of eateries to choose from here. Baby back ribs, rib eye, and more are served up most delectably at Wyoming's Rib and Chop House. The wine list is extensive and, needless to say, they specialize in hearty bold reds.
Ballooning in Greater Yellowstone
The scenery doesn't stop for a minute and isn't bound to the ground when you see the region by air. Balloon rides on a romantic getaway are perfect because often you don't want to trudge on narrow muddy trails but you still want to see the sights. The perfect way to do so is from the air. View the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone Plateau all without breaking a sweat. Enjoy the romance of Yellowstone and float on air!
