Things to do / Travel Guide
If you set aside some of the greatest outdoors territory in the U.S. as a national park, sooner or later luxury establishments catering to the discerning traveler are bound to spring up. This is the rule for the greater Yellowstone region. Both Yellowstone itself and Grand Teton National Park boast all the elements necessary for a top-notch luxury vacation.
The cities of Cody and Jackson are bound to surprise you with the level of service to be found there. Although they boast proximity to several of the top-notch ski resorts in the region, the après ski experience in these towns can actually surpass your enjoyment on the slopes. As Yellowstone is known for its geysers, many of the resorts feature their own private hot springs.
A Luxury Vacation in Cody
A stay in Cody immediately conjures up images of the old West. Doesn't the idea of staying in a real hotel from the cowboy era sound enticing? Don't worry, there won't be any shoot-outs! The place is Chamberlain Inn, built in the early years of the 20th century and recently renovated into a high-quality boutique. If you're a literature fan, you might want to check in to the Hemingway King Studio Suite. Ernest Hemmingway himself actually stayed there during his pilgrimage out West in the 1930s. The suite has been renovated, with the present design inspired by the author's known tastes.
If you choose to venture outside the hotel for a bite to eat, you'll have quite a decision on your hands, considering the plethora of available steak restaurants! A steak connoisseur can find the best cuts of steak either in a New York eatery or right here on Cody's main street – Sheridan Avenue. Settle down to a fantastic steak dinner at the Proud Cut Saloon, or any of the other fine eateries to be found here.
A Luxury Vacation in Jackson Hole
Jackson and Jackson Hole are prime ski country, so skiing and echoes of the Old West can be found reverberating on the streets and downtowns and outside the cities.
Take The Bentwood Inn. Your first thought will be "whoever knew a log cabin could be so luxurious." Your second thought will be "this is one big log cabin!" By day, hit the slopes at the ski resorts and by night participate in the lodge's wine and cheese tasting events, or hole up around the fire in your own room. When morning comes, there's a lush selection of French toast, pancakes, home fries, bacon and eggs, and more.
There are three ski resorts around Jackson Hole, and they're all excellent. Snow King, the smallest of the three, is unique in that its ski area is only six blocks from the center of Jackson. This resort is filled with steep expert runs, and its near-perfect fall line makes it a favorite for racers; professional and amateur alike. Go straight from skiing, out to one of the numerous cafés to grab a bite to eat or warm up by the stove.
For some of the best meals in town, head down Broadway to the Gun Barrel Steak & Game House. Filled with antiques and mementos from the Wild West, with amazing smells wafting through the air, you won't think twice when it comes time to “draw” your wallet. They really know how to pile it on at this landmark eatery, with starters like bison carpaccio, entrées such as the mesquite elk chop, and desserts like the double barrel cheesecake.
Luxury Golf Resort in Jackson Hole
Winter isn't the only time of year to visit greater Yellowstone. Come spring, summer, and autumn, playing golf in the shadows of the Grand Tetons is the discerning traveler's choice. The place to be is Teton Pines Resort and Country Club, and the course itself was designed by none other than Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay. Lakes abound on and around the course, and the forests provide a haven for the numerous types of wildlife in the area.
Inside one of the town home units, enjoy the hot tub, the fireplace, the decks – and of course the king-size bed. Dining is always a treat at The Pines Restaurant, which features a progressive American cuisine, or at the resort's sushi bar, Mizu Sushi. In addition to golf, you can choose to stretch your legs and get your heart racing out on the tennis courts, in the swimming pool, or by fly fishing in the area's streams.
You'll find greater Yellowstone to be a vast region of untamed nature, yes dotted with tempting pockets of wild, outdoorsy luxury. Don't hold back! Be tempted to answer the call of the wild! Just make sure to make it back in time for some juicy elk tenderloin.
