Flights to Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

The main airports nearest to Yellowstone National Park are in West Yellowstone. There are airports in Jackson (56 miles), Cody (52 miles), Bozeman (65 miles), Billings (129 miles), and Idaho Falls (107 miles). Depending on the point of origin, some visitors opt to land in Salt Lake City (390 miles) or Denver (563 miles) and rent a car from there. This can often be the more economical option, as local commercial airline service may be a bit more expensive.

Located about four miles inside Grand Teton National Park, Jackson Hole Airport, 8.5 miles from the town of Jackson, is the only US airport inside a national park, making it both a convenient and beautiful hub for one of the region's leading attractions. There are frequent flights between Jackson Hole and Salt Lake City, Denver, and Chicago.

Flights to Montana and Idaho

West Yellowstone hosts the closest airport to Yellowstone National Park, offering at least three daily summer flights to and from Salt Lake City. Billing's Logan International Airport has connections to Salt Lake City, Denver, Minneapolis, and Seattle. Bozeman's Gallatin Field Airport has similar connections, adding Detroit to the list of destinations. Cody's Yellowstone Regional Airport has flights to Salt Lake City and Denver. Fanning Field Municipal Airport in Idaho Falls offers flights to and from Boise, Salt Lake City, and Seattle.

Getting to Yellowstone Gateways by Car

In addition to providing fast and convenient access to some of the region's northern and eastern-most gateway towns and entrances to Yellowstone, U.S. Interstate 90 connects the Yellowstone area to the eastern and western United States. Visitors to the region can follow I-90 across South Dakota, past the Badlands and Mount Rushmore, into eastern Wyoming. The interstate heads northward toward Montana mid-way across the state, but several highways off the interstate access eastern regional hot spots like the town of Cody or Thermopolis.
The interstate veers west in Montana near the town of Billings, passing through some of the Yellowstone area's northern-most gateway towns. This is also the point where U.S. Interstate 94, coming in on the east from North Dakota, enters the Yellowstone region in Montana. I-90 continues into the state of Washington, giving visitors from the west access to Yellowstone as well.

Visitors traveling into the region south from Canada or north from Salt Lake City, Utah or Las Vegas will find Interstate 15 travels north to south along the western borders of Greater Yellowstone, providing access to West Yellowstone and hitting I-90 in Montana.

From the west, Oregon's Interstate 84 also hits I-15. Visitors from Colorado can take Interstate 25 into southeastern Wyoming, with access to highways leading west into the region.

Driving to Yellowstone from Salt Lake, Las Vegas, Denver and Seattle

The following are approximate driving distances and times to and from West Yellowstone, MT; Jackson, WY; and Cody, WY to other destinations outside the Yellowstone region:
  • Salt Lake City: West Yellowstone – 320 miles, 5 hours; Jackson – 300 miles, 5 hours; Cody - 470 miles, 8 hours 30 minutes
  • Las Vegas: West Yellowstone – 740 miles, 10 hours 30 minutes; Jackson – 720 miles, 10 hours 45 minutes; Cody – 885 miles, 14 hours 15 minutes
  • Denver: West Yellowstone – 590 miles, 10 hours; Jackson – 525 miles, 8 hours 15 minutes; Cody – 490 miles, 7 hours 30 minutes
  • Seattle: West Yellowstone – 755 miles, 11 hours; Jackson – 877 miles, 13 hours; Cody – 900 miles, 13 hours 15 minutes

Getting to Yellowstone by Bus and Train

Tourists traveling from outside the region can catch a Greyhound bus to stations in the Montana towns of Bozeman, Livingston, and Helena. In Wyoming, there is a station in Cody and a stop in Thermopolis and Shoshoni. Nearby, Billings Montana serves as a local hub, with most out-of-state bus services stopping in the town before heading to the the Yellowstone area destinations.
