The Brookgreen Gardens has the only accredited zoo on the coast of the Carolinas. Within its more than 9,000 acres are the Low Country History and Wildlife Preserve, the Huntington Sculpture Garden, and the Center for American Sculpture. The Wildlife Preserve contains animals and plants from the "Low Country" and can be viewed by boat or overland vehicle. Among the native animals you'll see are waterfowl, river otter, owls, hawks, eagles, foxes, and deer. The bird watching is exceptional. There are also spots for picnicking and camping.

From Brookgreen Gardens - Murrells Inlet (Myrtle Beach), South Carolina:

In 1931, Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, founded Brookgreen Gardens, a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, to preserve the native flora and fauna and display objects of art within that natural setting. The thousands of acres in Brookgreen's Lowcountry History and Wildlife Preserve are rich with evidence of the native plants and animals of the South Carolina Lowcountry as well as the great rice plantations of the 1800's. Explore these places through the programs at the Lowcountry Center by walking the Lowcountry Trail and by taking an excursion on our boat or overland vehicle deep into the preserve.
