Address:1 Philips Drive
Atlanta, Georgia
Our Sports Superfan Says:
Since its opening, the only bad thing about the state-of-the art Philips Arena has been its teams. The NBA's Atlanta Hawks and NHL's Atlanta Thrashers have never contended for championships since the arena opened for business in 1999. This run of bad luck has not, however, extended to the Philips Arena itself, which continues to attract plenty of other events and top acts.
The Thrashers and Hawks each play 41 regular season games a year at Philips Arena, plus assorted preseason and postseason games. The arena also hosted the 2003 NBA All-Star Game and the 2008 NHL All-Star Game, which was originally awarded to the arena in 2005 but cancelled because of the NHL lockout. It also used to host the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League for four seasons, and is set to host the Atlanta WNBA team when it begins play in the summer of 2008.
Philips Arena is right up there in terms of amenities and features with other modern arenas. In addition to pro sports, the Arena also hosts concerts, pro wrestling events, and other entertainment shows. It is located in downtown Atlanta, next to the Georgia Dome and CNN Center, and is accessible via MARTA's East/West Line.
