Atlanta, Georgia

Our Sports Superfan Says:

The main indoor sports arena in the southeastern United States is definitely the Georgia Dome. It has hosted two Super Bowls, two basketball Final Fours, two more NCAA Tournament regional championships, the Sugar Bowl, in 2006, the Peach Bowl from 1992 onward, the SEC football championship game, the ACC and SEC men's basketball tournament, the Atlanta Hawks for three seasons, several sports during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and a number of many pro wrestling events. What's even more remarkable is that all of this has occurred since the Dome's opening in 1992!

Naturally, the Georgia Dome also hosts a professional home team. The Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League, play their two preseason, eight regular season and, when relevant, up to two postseason games at the Dome. Because only 12 dates are set in stone every year (Falcons and postseason college football), the Georgia Dome is free to attract a diverse array of events throughout the year.

The arena currently has a total capacity of 71,228. However, the largest crowd in Georgia Dome history was when 84,459 people squeezed in to see pastor T.D. Jakes in 1999. It set an attendance record in the NBA, with 62,046 coming to watch the Hawks (temporarily using the dome as their home while their arena was being constructed) play against Michael Jordan's Bulls in 1998. It also has the ACC Tournament record with 40,083 in 2001, and the Final Four record with 53,406 showing up to watch.

The Georgia Dome offers a tour of the facility every Tuesday through Saturday, as long as there isn't anything else taking precedence, with discounted rates available for students, seniors, and groups.

The Dome is located in downtown Atlanta, and can be accessed via mass transit at the Phillips Arena/Dome/GWCC, Five Points, Peachtree Center, and Vine City stations. There are also 22,000 parking spaces available for those who prefer to come by car.
