More than 12,000 years of human life passed through Ocmulgee National Monument near Macon, Georgia, at one point or another. One in particular, the Mississipians, a highly-developed farming group who inhabited the area from 900 A.D. until 1200 A.D., is highlighted at the Monument.
The park's main features include more than 5 miles of walking trails, a burial mound, a reconstructed thousand-year-old ceremonial earthlodge, temple mounds, prehistoric trenches, and the site of a colonial British trading post. The park hosts several outstanding cultural events throughout the year. Hiking and fishing are popular activities throughout the park.
