Visit the place where America's most influential Civil Rights leader was born and see the church where he preached. Learn about the life of the great Dr. King and his role in the Civil Rights Movement at this moving site dedicated to his life and messages.
The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site is located east of downtown Atlanta, in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood. Dr. King's boyhood home, his crypt and the Ebenezer Baptist Church are all part of the site, which covers several city blocks. Visitors can take the self-guided tours of all the buildings, except the birth home, which requires advance sign-up at the visitor center. Since tours usually fill up by noon, sign up upon arival and visit the other buildings while you wait for your tour. The "Children of Courage" exhibit, geared towards younger visitors, tells the story of the children of the Civil Rights Movement, and don't miss "Courage to Lead" which follows the stories of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. Particularly poignant are 8 life-sized statues of men and women in a simulated Freedom March of the 1960s where old spiritual songs are played. In the Peace Plaza, the beautifully landscaped plaza area has an International World Peace Rose Garden and lovely flowing water fountain, which displays inspirational words of peace composed by local Atlanta students. Best of all, admission here is free, so be sure not to miss this incredible site, dedicated to freedom and the great messages of Dr. King.
To get here from I-75/85 North or South, take exit 248C. At the traffic light, turn right onto Boulevard NE. Make another immediate right at the light onto John Wesley Dobbs Avenue. The visitor parking lot will be on your left. Join the freedom fighters as they march towards peace while listening to the inspirational words of the man who led us all, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
