Our History Buff Says:

Travel back in time from World War II to the American Revolution! Relive 171 years of seacoast defense, including the first decisive victory in the American Revolution! Fort Moultrie is the name of a series of forts on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, built to protect the city of Charleston. It is the site of one of the most important Civil War battles at Fort Sumter; today, visitors are invited to Fort Sumter to see firsthand this fascinating site.

Visitors should definitely partake in the Fort Moultrie tour which highlights the evolution of coastal defenses. The Visitor Center, also worth visiting, has museum exhibits and an interactive video, as well as a 22 minute orientation film shown every 1.5 hours. Visitors can spend the day bicycling through Sullivan's Island and can enjoy a boat trip, where a recording tells listeners about the history of the Charleston harbor and points out some of the sites you pass on the way to the fort. Though the fort itself is in disrepair (with evidence of Union gunboat damage), there are many cannons still at the site, so you can get up close and personal with some of the weapons belonging to soldiers who fought over 100 years ago!

Fort Moultrie is located on Sullivan's Island on Middle Street. You can get there by taking US-17 to Mt. Pleasant and then making a right onto SC-703 which will bring you to Middle Street. Have a great time learning, touring and adventuring at this intriguing military site!
