Our History Buff Says:

Come visit the fort where Georgia's fate was decided in 1742, at Fort Frederica National Monument! Explore an archeological excavation site, once the epicenter of a centuries-old imperial conflict between Spain and Britain!

Fort Frederica was constructed in 1736 by General James Oglethorpe when Spanish and British forces clashed on St. Simons Island. Ultimately, Fort Frederica's troops defeated the Spanish, and ensured Georgia's future as a British colony. Today, the archeological remnants of Frederica include a small portion of the king's magazine and the barracks tower, and excavations have unearthed many house foundations, too. Although no whole structures remain, ruins can be visited along with the island's chief attraction, the Fort Frederica National Monument on the northwest end of the island. Visitors can watch the 25 minute film and displays explaining the role of the Fort along with interactive touch-screen information computers. There's also a great self-guided walking trail that leads past wayside exhibits and signs explaining daily life in "Frederica Town." Remember to pick up a souvenir at the Museum Store, which offers a wide selection of books, magazines, pamphlets, children's items, colonial objects, postcards, and slides—a little of something for everyone!
