Address:Tybee Island, Georgia
Although the word means "salt" to Native Americans, Tybee Island Beach will actually leave you with a sweet feeling with its low-key vibes, sun and surf. Located 18 miles east of Savannah, Tybee is a three mile long barrier island that's decorated with sea oats and sand dunes and is home to warm, gentle waves. The sand on the beach is composed of tiny grains of Appalachian Mountain granite that's been washed downstream, and is terrific for serious sandcastle construction. The packed sand is also great for walks and at low tide, for biking too. Visitors come here to Tybee Island Beach to sunbathe, people-watch and splash in the Atlantic Ocean waters. If you head to the island's south-end pier and pavilion, you may even catch a tune or two of live music. There are actually several segments of beach to choose from at Tybee: If you're looking for shopping and good food, South Beach is the place to be and is also the most populated beach. Mid Beach is better for you if you're looking for a bit more quietude and North Beach is perfect for shelling, dolphin watching, and watching ships travel to and from the busy Port of Savannah. Although vacationers are lured to Tybee mainly because of the opportunities for recreation and relaxation, history buffs will have plenty to enjoy here too. The island is home to Fort Screven, a 1773 Lighthouse and museum and Fort Pulaski, just west of the island. In addition, Tybee Island is an excellent locale for birders to visit as part of Georgia's coastal salt marsh system which is home to many species of wading birds from egrets and herons to white ibis and the endangered woodstork. In fact, an ideal way to see the birds is to charter a boat ride through the marsh creeks. Enjoy your trip to Tybee Island Beach!
