Our Beach Bum Says:

Get ready for a world famous vacation spot made for beach-loving families, as well as golfers and tennis players. With 14 miles of sparkling beaches, 24 golf courses (on the island or nearby), hundreds of tennis courts, and over 200 restaurants, Hilton Head is a highly popular Atlantic Ocean coast getaway. Visitors can enjoy warm waters and lazy days in the sand in six different beach areas (five of which boast on duty life guards from Memorial weekend to Labor Day). Official swimming areas can be found in the Alder, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field, and Islanders beaches, with clearly marked boundaries both in the beach and in the water. In fact, Hilton Head's beaches boast a gradual slope, which means one can go out a long way from shore and still stand with their head above water. This slope also inhibits wave action, however, so don't expect a surfer's beach here. What you can look forward to is hard-packed sand that's perfect for biking, a popular pastime at the Hilton Head beaches, and a coastal paradise that's great for relaxing in the sun. The beach boasts activities like scuba diving, water-skiing, and even dolphin watching. Fishing charters, kayak tours, and windsurfing are available too, for your enjoyment. Coligny Beach, the island's busiest beach, has got permanent volleyball nets set up, and an outdoor bar, for those who want to let their hair down, just off the beach at the Holiday Inn. It also features rest rooms, changing rooms, water fountains, sand showers, and recently added mats specially installed to make the beach wheelchair accessible. Beach equipment, recumbent bikes, sand trikes, and umbrellas are all available for rent at lifeguard stations right on the beach. Note that the lifeguards get paid based on commissions on rentals so with any equipment you try out you're also helping those who dedicate their time to keeping you safe on the beach.
