Things to do / Travel Guide
During the winter there are brief spells of cold weather, although on the most part, there is cool to mild weather. In the Georgia and South Carolina Coast region, where snow is rare, freezing rain proves hazardous in these winter months. In the spring, occasional storms make for some rainy days, but travelers to the region during this time can mainly expect long stretches of warm, sunny weather. It is in the spring when the region's flowers are in bloom, including cherry blossoms, azaleas, dogwoods, and apple blossoms. Hot, humid, and steamy weather in the summer causes thunderstorms on an almost daily basis. The warm waters off the coast warm up the air in the dry fall bringing many fine, sunny days to the region. Throughout the summer and fall, the region is on hurricane watch especially from mid-August to mid-October. The water warms up the air bringing many fine, sunny days during this dry season. During the fall, there is also spectacular foliage.
Note that the closer you are to the coast, the warmer the weather usually is. For example, it snows about once a year in the greater Atlanta area, while near the coasts it's just about once a decade. Freezing rain is also highly unlikely near the coastal areas of the region. Also, while authorities are not on constant tornado watch, twisters have in the past hit the region in every month of the calendar year.
