Things to do / Travel Guide
The Georgia and South Carolina region possesses over 300 miles of coastline making it one long scenic overlook over the Atlantic Coast. Closer to Atlanta and the foothills of the Appalachians, other opportunities to find scenic vistas abound.
Stone Mountain
The world's largest outcropping of exposed granite is located just 16 miles east of downtown Atlanta. The 825-foot-high Stone Mountain features the largest high-relief sculpture in the world, covering three acres and featuring Confederate heroes Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. There is a skylift to the top of the mountain, or you can take a 1.3-mile foot trail.
Nowadays, laser shows featuring classic rock and modern rock play some nights a week at the mountain. It's really cool to see the multicolored lasers bouncing around the mountain.
Lighthouses and Lighthouse Views in Georgia and South Carolina
The Georgia and South Carolina coast contains a total of 14 lighthouses, half of which are still active. They range in height from just 25 feet to over 150 feet. The lighthouses give the visitor a great view of both the Atlantic and the coastline itself. Some of the best-kept lighthouses are the St. Simons Island Lighthouse, the Tybee Island Lighthouse, and the Morris Island Lighthouse off the coast of Charleston.
You can climb up the steps of the St. Simons Island lighthouse any daytime until 4:45 p.m., though there is an admission fee. The present lighthouse has been shining since 1972, and today, you can have a good view of the surrounding town of St. Simons, the Atlantic, and Jekyll Island.
Another fascinating lighthouse is the Morris Island Lighthouse. Unfortunately this one you can't climb up, for the good reason that by now it's completely out to sea. It was built 1,200 feet onshore, but since the 1940s or so it's been completely surrounded by water. Despite the fact that you can't scale it, the lighthouse remains something of a Charleston landmark, and it figures into many scenes against a sunset.
Find Morris Island Lighthouse by taking State Road to Folly Island, taking a left onto Ashley Avenue until its termination, then walking a few minutes to the northeast tip of the island. The lighthouse will be to the north, slightly northeast.
