Romantic Vacation Getaways in Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, SC, Atlanta, Savannah, GA

Things to do / Travel Guide

You should expect a lot from a region that claims to include "the New York of the South" and the "Paris of the South," and Georgia and the South Carolina coast won't disappoint. Romance thrives in the region's cities and resort islands, like Spanish moss on the local live oaks. For a fun-filled vacation, filled with bright lights, great clubs, and entertainment, head to Atlanta, the so-called southern New York. For tree-lined avenues, and a lovely atmosphere just perfect for walks, Charleston, also known as the Paris of the South, should be on your wish-list.

A Romantic Getaway in Atlanta

In Atlanta it is best to lodge close to Peachtree Avenue if you can, but not on it! That way you get to enjoy the hustle and bustle of this central avenue, without having to suffer from its noise. The Shellmont Inn, for example, is an ideal place to stay. The Shellmont was originally a mansion, dating back to the late 19th century. It has been renovated over the years as a top of the line bed and breakfast (B&B). The stained glass window over the stairway is classic, the wallpaper is gorgeous, the woodwork is inspiring; a perfect place to stay on a romantic getaway! The hearty breakfasts they serve, from a menu which changes every morning, are a great start to one's day before setting out to explore the city.

The highlight to any romantic vacation in Atlanta is a night of entertainment at any of the grand halls in the downtown area. For a great experience, that you'll be sure to want to write home about, see what's playing at Fox Theatre on Peachtree Street. Before entering the theatre, make sure to take note of the innovative Moorish architecture. In fact keep looking around and drinking in your surroundings until the curtains are drawn, and the show begins. Never seen “Cats?” Now's the time! You'll always be able to find a good selection of ballet, dance, Broadway shows, and music concerts here at the Fox.
Now that's a great evening in anyone's book!

Of course, you can't visit Atlanta without checking out what's happening in Buckhead, the city's center for all things hip and modern. You can shop, find a good club or bar, or settle down for a great dining experience. One Buckhead establishment with a great ambiance is Aria. The décor is an exercise in solids and materials, while the cuisine is eclectic gourmet. The head chef's specialty is slow preparation, so expect lots of roasting and stewing. Try the pan-roasted breast of duck or the Zinfandel-braised beef short ribs to get the idea. They do a great job on the desserts as well. Chocolate connoisseurs will be sure to love the warm chocolate cheesecake or the Valrhona chocolate cream pie.

A Romantic Vacation in Charleston

Charleston is a venerable old city, yet at the same time it manages to retain an encouraging freshness for couples seeking out its secrets. Get started by wandering the Battery, located right on the water, and don't miss out on White Point Gardens, with its live oaks and war monuments. Even once you've tired of walking, that's no reason to call it a day. Simply continue your explorations in the romantic comfort of a horse-drawn carriage.

Waterfront Park, on the side of the peninsula opposite the Battery (but still a short walk away), contains fountains, and is an excellent point from which to watch the sunset. The famed, scenic Rainbow Row is located here, so if you come on by, you may well end up on someone's postcard.

Stay right in the middle of it all, at the John Rutledge House Inn. The Honorable Mr. Rutledge was, among other things, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. As such, in addition to a splendid romantic time, you're experiencing a piece of history by staying at his house. The house was built at a time when house design was considered an art, and the inlaid floors, Italian-marble fireplaces, and plaster moldings have all been lovingly renovated. The rooms are spacious and contain all the modern amenities you should expect (yes, that includes a Jacuzzi), and the concierge service is, as you'd expect, top-rate.

Where should you eat? Best to delay the decision - it's just too difficult. Charleston is replete with top-tier restaurants, known for their gentle ambiance and southern hospitality. Try Fig for an innovative bistro and a classy wine list; Robert's, for a really special occasion and personal atmosphere; Charleston Grill, if you want to really be spoiled by decadent meats and seafood; Slightly North of Broad, for urban chic; or the Dining Room at Wodlands, for a fancy prix fixe dinner with the best service. There are lots more, but you wouldn't want too much of a good thing. Or would you…?

Outside the city, there are a number of former plantations, now made into museums, which are good places to spend a lazy afternoon. One such destination is Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. Take the tour of the mansion and the estate, learn how the other half lived, meander down the marshes, and enjoy the gardens, even in winter. Top it all off with cookies and sweets back at the John Rutledge House Inn. This is how a romantic vacation should be!

Ballooning in Georgia and the South Carolina Coast

The beautiful scenery, both coastal and inland, of Georgia and South Carolina is the perfect backdrop for a hot air balloon ride. Lush green meadows changing to views of city life and boat-filled bays fading to island-dotted coasts are just some of the sights that really need to be experienced by balloon. Regardless of whether this is the start of your romantic getaway or the grand finale, sit back, relax, and soak in the views of this terrific region. If you feel like popping open a bottle of champagne, all the better!
