Things to do / Travel Guide
Golfers rejoice! In the Georgia and South Carolina region you are entering a golfing paradise where the drives fly further, pitch shots roll within feet of the hole, and the greens are always forgiving.
On a good day.
Otherwise you just have to content yourself with playing on some of the most beautiful, and often most challenging courses in the United States. Here are a few of them:
The Wild Dunes Resort Links Course is known for its tremendous, humpbacked sand dunes and big finish along the Atlantic Ocean. This is a gorgeous course the will challenge even the very best among us.
Tidewater will take you by the Atlantic Ocean, where you'll hear the roar of the waves, and then send you into thick woods for some quiet concentration. You'll overlook dramatic bluffs and play alongside the intracoastal waterway and saltwater marshes.
The golf on the Barefoot Resort & Golf Love Course offers wide fairways and generous landing areas. You'll also find a lot of water throughout the design, ready to catch any errant shots. Alternatively, you can try the Barefoot Resort & Golf Fazio Course where many elevation changes and water aplenty add to the drama and challenge of your day - a day all will enjoy regardless of their skill levels.
Interested in playing a course which offers absolutely gorgeous views of an intercoastal waterway which lines many holes? Then you'll have to check out the Grande Dunes Golf Club Resort Course.
The Dunes Golf and Beach Club is a traditional course which has played host to many men's and women's tournaments. Golf Magazine and Golfweek have both ranked it very high on their lists of the best courses in the U.S. The views are simply fabulous.
Here's what some say about The Legends Heathland Course - it's just like Scotland's St. Andrews, only with sunshine. Enjoy a fabulous day of golf in a links-style course reminiscent of the famous courses from Great Britain.
If you like challenges, you'll love TPC at Myrtle Beach, a club at which PGA tour professionals are known to play. This is a challenging course with wetlands, rolling greens, and sloping fairways. Oh yes, and lots of bunkers.
Golf Digest has in the past ranked the True Blue Golf Club the #1 golf course in the Myrtle Beach area. Every golfer will enjoy the stately Southern ambience on this former indigo and rice plantation.
Water and marshes also come into play in the picturesque Heritage Club, ensuring a difficult, but at least visually satisfying outing.
Golf is as fun to watch as it is to play when rocking on the porch of the replica plantation mansion at the Caledonia Golf and Fish Club. You'll continue to feel the history of the Old South as you play through this former rice plantation which was later turned into a fishing and hunting preserve.
