  • REM's video “Everybody Hurts” was filmed at Spaghetti Junction in Atlanta, where I-75, I-85, I-285, and I-20 converge.
  • The name of the REM album “Automatic for the People” comes from the slogan of a local Athens soul food restaurant called Weaver D's.
  • Even though Georgia is called the “Peach State,” it is also the number one U.S. producer of peanuts and pecans as well.
  • Over 75% of all the Africans that were brought to slavery in America came through Charleston's port.
  • From out of the darkness in Alapaha, Georgia, in 2004, came “Hogzilla,” the world's largest wild hog. It weighed in at over half a ton and measured an amazing 12 feet in length.
  • Scenes from the Civil War epic “Glory,” which starred Morgan Freeman, Mathew Broderick, and Denzel Washington, were filmed on Jekyll Island. The movie also featured scenes including Fort Sumter, where the Civil War began.
  • Scenes from “Forest Gump” and “G.I. Jane” were filmed in Beaufort, the historic city near Hilton Head.
  • The Hollywood movie “The Patriot,” starring Mel Gibson, is partly based on the story of Francis Marion, who fought in the Revolutionary War in South Carolina.
  • Just south of Atlanta's downtown is the Atlanta Cyclorama: This is the world's largest painting, measuring 358 feet long and 42 feet high. It was painted in 1886 and depicts the Battle of Atlanta in 1864. The actor Clark Gable was added in after “Gone with the Wind” was produced, and he appears as a dying soldier on the sidelines.
  • The State of Georgia has been a powerhouse for music since the early years of the 20th century. Macon is home to the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, which pays tribute to the laundry list of these famous Georgia musicians: Ray Charles, R.E.M., Otis Redding, Johnny Mercer, B-52s, Lena Horne, Gladys Knight, the Allman Brothers, James Brown, and many others. Many of these lived in or were born in Macon or Athens.
  • Charleston's Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim is the oldest continuously-used synagogue in the U.S.
  • Of all the Golden Isles, Sea Island is the most exclusive. The island is home to the luxurious Sea Island Club, which had the distinct honor of hosting the G8 conference in 2004.
