Things to do / Travel Guide
Georgians and South Carolinians love their fun, but local adventures they take don't just consist of the standard biking and camping. Read on.
Climbing in Georgia
Georgia's unique geographical features offer some prime rock climbing opportunities. There are lots of places near Atlanta to climb. One of the best is a bit west of the city, on Boat Rock Road off of Baker's Ferry Road. At the end of this road is a parking lot, and next to a small kiosk is a path. Take the path and you'll find some good climbs with some challenging overhangs. This area is a subdivision, called Adamsville, so be sure to only climb boulders on the path and not in people's backyards. The boulders here are granite and there's lots of slab and balance climbing mixed in with some challenging overhangs.
Farther southeast, near Macon, there are the Hitchiti and Juliette boulders. These granite boulders are up to 20 feet tall. The Juliette boulders are located right on Lake Juliette and almost all of them feature some kind of overhang to tackle.
Waterskiing in Georgia
The major lakes in Georgia offer plenty of water activities. Lake Jackson, Lake Lanier, Lake Oconee, and Lake Allatoona, all offer any combination of waterskiing or jet-skiing. Find the major port for the lake you want to water-ski on, and that's usually where the service is offered.
Hot Air Ballooning in Georgia and South Carolina
The beautiful scenery, coastal and inland, of Georgia and South Carolina, is the perfect backdrop for a hot air balloon ride. These rides usually last about an hour, and you get to see the scenery below slowly change. Lush green may change to views of city life and boat-filled bays change to island-dotted coasts. There are three main areas where hot air balloon companies can be found - around Atlanta, Savannah, and Charleston.
