Our Ski Specialist Says:

This self-described "Mom and Pop local ski area" is a friendly, affordable and – almost antique – way to get in a quick ski or snowboarding fix. This "friendly little hill" on the side of a highway is better for a drop-in evening or afternoon of skiing, tubing, or snowboarding rather than an all-inclusive vacation destination. There is one hotel and one Bed and Breakfast located in the town of Hesperus itself, which is actually the farthest southwest ski area in Colorado, but plenty more options in nearby Durango or Cortez. Sunset views of the La Plata Canyon and Mountains from the top of the 8,880-foot summit are a highlight, available because of Hesperus' night time ski options throughout the week. Single-parent families $100 discount off rental and lift tickets, and events like date night (Two ski for the price of one), insure Hesperus need not worry about getting sucked into the "mega-corporate ski Area/real estate development" trend from which it sets itself apart.

With modest offering in terms of terrain, Hesperus has a beginner's area separate from advanced terrain, and intermediate slopes from the Midway Station. Ridge Top also offers some intermediate and advanced terrain. Some local favorites for skiing include Lone Juniper and Aspen Glade trails. There is a terrain park, VW jump, half pipe, rail slides and other features. Late-risers will be pleased with the nighttime hours: 2 -9 pm during the week, and 9 am to 9 pm on the weekends.

2 lifts including 1 surface lift and 1 chair lift. $$ (Moderately Priced)

13 runs - 30% beginner, 20% intermediate, 50% expert. Longest run is 5,500 feet.

Mountain Statistics: 700 feet vertical drop, 8,880 feet summit elevation, 80 acres, average annual accumulation 150 inches.
