At Hovenweep National Monument located in both Utah and Colorado, you'll be able to explore the remains of the nomadic Paleo-Indians inhabitants who lived in the region as early as 14,000 years ago. Most of the six main structures at Hovenweep, however, were built between 1200 and 1300 A.D. The exact use of the impressive cliff-side structures has not been determined, although several theories abound suggesting their use for homes, ceremonial sites, defensive forts and civic buildings. Whatever their intended use, they are today regarded as important tools for linking the present Four Corners region to its past.
A two-mile loop around the absolutely stunning Square Tower Group (in Utah) is a must for anyone who wants to explore the ancient architecture and silent beauty of the rock formations. Activities in the park are limited to hiking and camping.
From Hovenweep National Monument - Colorado:
Hovenweep National Monument protects six prehistoric, Puebloan-era villages spread over a twenty-mile expanse of mesa tops and canyons along the Utah-Colorado border. Multi-storied towers perched on canyon rims and balanced on boulders lead visitors to marvel at the skill and motivation of their builders.
