Bear witness to the oldest meeting point between Indian and American settlers through a tour at the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site in Ganado, Arizona. In the late 19th century, the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site served as a gathering place for Navajo and American traders and settlers. Today, the site hosts the oldest continuously operated trading post in the American Southwest, as well as a variety of tours.
In 1878, ten years after the Navajo people were allowed to return to the area after a US-imposed exile, John Lorenzo Hubbell purchased the trading post that would become the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site. Because of the decimation wrought on their herds after their return, the Navajo were forced to embrace a trading lifestyle. The idea to designate the area as the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site came in 1957, though it was only put into action in 1966.
The Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site offers visitors the opportunity to experience the area from a variety of perspectives. Ranger-guided and self-guided tours take visitors through the Hubbell Home, visitor center and the trading post. The site still functions as a trading post, offering visitors the chance to shop for authentic native rugs, jewelry, and more. As there are only snacks available in and near the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site, visitors should pack accordingly.
