Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs raceway offers you an unforgettable day of harness racing, simulcast racing, gambling, and so much more. Pocono Downs raceway in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, offers a great schedule of 143 live racing days stretching from April through to November. Pocono Downs raceway is an impressive harness racing track owned by the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority. It's widely acknowledged as one of the best smaller-sized tracks in America. Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs attracts large numbers of enthusiastic harness racing fans to its fine facilities every season. The race track itself is a 5/8 mile dirt track, with a stone aggregate base and red rock screenings as a top layer. The stables are able to handle 700 standard bred horses. The Grandstand can accommodate up to 3,000 people, while the clubhouse can hold up to 500.
The race track is home to several important harness racing stakes events each year. Among these are the Pennsylvania Sires Stakes, the Max Hempt Memorial Pace, the James Lynch Memorial Pace, and the Reynolds Stakes. In addition, simulcast viewing and wagering takes place all through the week, which means that the thrill of harness racing never slows down at Pocono Downs. In addition to racing, Pocono Downs offers two gaming floors, with over a thousand slot machines. The entrance splits the casino and racetrack areas, offering visitors their choice of different atmospheres.
A crowd estimated at 12,000 showed up for Pocono Downs' opening on July 15, 1965. Throughout the years, the track has experienced numerous changes and improvements. One of the largest changes took place in 2005 when the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority purchased the race track along with its 5 off-track establishments and the facility became renamed as the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. Now, once again, this fantastic establishment is to receive a face-lift. "Project Sunrise," a casino and entertainment complex, is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2008, and race goers can look forward to exciting extras. The new additions include slot machines, more restaurants, a large food court, bars, a nightclub, a children's center, a retail zone, and more parking. Mohegan Sun is now awaiting approval to open the first casino in Pennsylvania, to the great delight of racing fanatics.
Live harness racing takes place Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and post time is 2pm. Simulcast action from racetracks across the country is available 24/7, and there's always free admission
