Our Sports Superfan Says:
Plucky national underdog Smarty Jones raced at Philadelphia Park, as did Spectacular Bid and Summer Squall. While not quite on the top level of US tracks,, Philadelphia Park is the home of the best racing in Pennsylvania. The addition of a slots casino, in 2006, has helped Philadelphia Park to continue serving as a popular local attraction.
Philadelphia Park has racing throughout the year, with its most important race being Labor Day's Pennsylvania Derby, offering a purse of $1 million. The Derby is a Grade II race for three-year-olds. There is also a Breeder's Cup Handicap race; the Grade II Fitz Dixon Cotillion. In the past, the track hosted the Pennsylvania State Fair for 20 years, but that ended with the casino's opening in 2006.
The racetrack itself opened in 1974in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. It is located about 20 miles southeast of Philadelphia, and can be reached on SEPTA's 1 and 130 bus services.
