Our Ski Specialist Says:

If steep downhill thrills are your thing, then Snö Mountain, formerly called Montage Mountains Ski Area, is the place to be. Priding itself on the steepest skiing slope in Pennsylvania, the resort caters to the upper, intermediate, and advanced skiers due to its steeps and its 1000 foot vertical drop. With a recent change in ownership, Snö Mountain's new management has great plans for this already exciting site.

With 21 trails and 6 lifts, the layout of the mountain is naturally separated by ability level, with the top of the mountain consisting mainly of beginner and intermediate slopes, and the diamonds and double diamonds concentrated at the bottom of the mountain. Snö Mountain has begun cutting seven new trails which include combined trails ensuring skiers and boarders are able to ski and ride for over a mile and a half. The mountain is open from 8:00am – 10:00pm daily, with 100% night skiing on its 140 acres. For those with less time on their hands, 4 hour passes are available.

Although the whole mountain is open to snowboarders, most of them end up at one of the two terrain parks or the massive half pipe. Due to their popularity, part of management's plan was to completely revamp the mountain's Terrain Parks. Snö Mountain has drafted the assistance of celebrated terrain development magician Pat Malendoski of Planet Snow Designs and world renowned snowboarder Ryan Neptune to expand the terrain park. More rails and jumps will be added to Mainline and Spike as well as banked wall rides, an a-frame wall ride, a stair case with kinked rail, and a rainbox; the terrain park will also be expanded to 4 trails. The existing 22 foot wide halfpipe, Stonehenge, will be joined by an additional halfpipe with its own magic lift.

Looking for a little time off your feet? For an additional cost, you're free to jet down 10 different tubing chutes on your own or with the kids. Management has recently replaced the tow lifts and the long lines that came with them and installed a carpet tubing lift allowing for a more comfortable quicker ride to the top of the mountain. For those who live closer to the mountain and are looking for a different kind of adrenaline rush, Snö Mountain adheres to the NASTAR (NAtional STandard Race) system, the largest recreational ski and snowboard race program in the world. These races allow skiers of all ages and abilities to learn, compete, and compare their results to those of other competitors, no matter where they race.

Due to a fire in 2005, the mountains lodge has been under renovation and for the moment is servicing its visitors from the "comfort" of temporary tents. Management has grand plans for this lodge, including a brand new deck with a mountain view. They also plan to construct a variety of restaurants inside the lodge. For the moment you're better off looking for a bite to eat just a couple of miles away in nearby Scranton, PA.

A large variety of restaurants and lodging options are available just around the corner in Scranton. Everything from Bed & Breakfast and local hotels to internationally recognized hotel chains provide a place to rest your legs after a long day on the mountain.

Snö Mountain is also just a few hours away from New York City and Philadelphia, so day trips are definitely a possibility.
