Want to ski two mountains for one price on the same day? Jack Frost and her sister mountain Big Boulder fit the bill exactly, with interchangeable tickets that allow you to ski Jack Frost from 9am to 4pm and then take the shuttle over to Big Boulder to continue the fun into the night from 4 to 10pm.
Located in Blakeslee, Pennsylvania, less than 2 hours away from Philadelphia or New York City, this ski area has all the amenities you would expect from a larger resort on a smaller scale. Expect to find over 3 snowboard terrain parks, double high-speed chairlifts, lodges with stages that host live music and festivals, as well as a separate snow tubing park! The employees are all locals who have been involved with snow sports since an early age and can help with any questions or skills you may need – be it skiing, snowboarding, or where to find the best burger place in town that will deliver to your hotel room or chalet! With an average snowfall of 50 inches each season and boasting a 100% coverage capacity of snow – fresh and manmade – you need never fear there being bare patches to slow you or your equipment down.
Trails are laid out in an easy to navigate system. The 5 beginner slopes are located on the right side of the mountain. As you progress left, you will encounter more and more challenging trails until you reach the "East Mountain" which boasts natural cliffs, everglades, and off-piste terrain. Easy access to the 9 lifts is spread across the mountain. This unique layout helps ensure that skiers and snowboarders will not end up on a trail they didn't intend to be on or one that fails matches their skill level. The "Powder Puff" and "Snowflake" trails are sure to delight the novice, while the moguls on "Thunderbolt" and "Floyd's Folly" will give the more advanced rider an exhilarating rush.
With only 600 feet of vertical drop, the slopes are shorter in length than advanced slopes at some larger mountains, so make the most of your time on each. Now is the time to carve into the snow like you always dreamed you could. Boasting a ski school with Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) certified instructors, Jack Frost offers lessons from ages 3 years and up, and can even accommodate adaptive and special needs customers. Learn-to-ski packages are offered daily, or lessons can be purchased individually for group or private one-on-one sessions.
Top of the line name brand rentals are stocked from floor to ceiling including equipment produced by Rossingnol, K12, Elan, Burton, and Nitro. There are private rental businesses en route to Jack Frost that also offer a nice selection and sometimes cheaper rates. Of course you're also welcome to bring your own equipment and just avail yourself of the Pro Shop for all your onsite clothing and repair needs. On weekends and holidays the lines in the rental shop may be longer than during the week, and selection will vary so plan accordingly. Another nice feature is that if you plan on visiting both mountains, you can rent your equipment on Jack Frost and return it to Big Boulder at the end of the night instead of having to return it where you rented it.
A family-oriented snow tubing park, with over six wide lanes, offers both single rider and "family" tubes which can seat up to 6 people comfortably on the same ride. Complete with a conveyor carpet for the little ones feet, and easy on/off access as well as a tow-pull rope, participants won't be caught off guard while being transported safely up the hill much more quickly. 15km of cross country skiing are also available for those who prefer a leisurely day of fun.
For those of you on a snowboard, there are 2 parks, one on each mountain, should you want to grab some air, day or night. Jack Frost boasts 2,600 sq ft. of freestyle terrain with 9 lifts and 22 trails exclusively for riders. On Big Boulder, freestylers can spread out on over 2,700 sq ft. of powder with 16 slopes and 8 lifts servicing this area alone. A state of the art sound system pumps out music to keep the adrenaline flowing as you hit the jumps and ride the rails. When the sun goes down you can stay even longer because there is ample lighting to continue. For the little ones, or beginner boarders, there is a special section that is dedicated for you to hone your skills before joining the larger park.
Rates at Jack Frost are competitive and there are various discounts offered weekly. With a current military ID, soldiers can ski on weekdays for about $10 and weekends for about $20! Spouses and their children, reservists and retirees also benefit from this deal, receiving 50% off the regular ticket prices. College students can experience Wednesday nights from 3pm till closing time for just around $10 per snowpass. Drink specials are also on tap here though you must bring a current ID to qualify. Twice a season, Midnight Madness keeps the lights on and the lifts running from 9pm to 3am!
There are four lodges on site with individual rooms or villas that can be rented out daily or weekly. Sixteen hotels and lodges are located less than 15 miles away with warm beds to welcome you at the end of your long day. Many of them accept AAA memberships and offer continental breakfasts. Three Bed and Breakfast's are located nearby for a more intimate feel. If you've worked up a big appetite, try the steakhouses, Italian restaurants, Tex-Mex cantinas, or pubs which serve American style bar food and appetizers.
It's best to bring your own vehicle or a rental as there is a lack of local public transportation, with no shuttle services presently available from any of the surrounding accommodations. The only exception is the shuttle service between the two ski mountains, offered solely to valid lift ticket holders. A unique feature to mention is that the parking and drop-off are at the top of the mountain and all the slopes lead downwards – so you're ready to go as soon as you get off the shuttle.
After a hard day of hitting the slopes, relax in the main lodge at the top of the 2000 foot elevation, grab a meal, lock your skis in the free ski check, browse the internet on the free Wi-fi access, and listen to the many bands that play on the main stage. From Irish bands and acoustic duos to national tribute bands, there is never a cover charge to hear great live music daily! The scheduled entertainment can be found daily in the lodge.
Nightlife can be found in the surrounding towns of Jim Thorpe, Blakeslee, Pocono Summit, and the city of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
