Our Ski Specialist Says:

Talk about being before their time! Pennsylvania's first commercial ski area, Big Boulder, was founded in 1949, and was already one of the first mountains to consider the use of man made snow way back in the early 1950s. The developments which have spawned from its original design have helped make Big Boulder what it is today. The Mountain possesses state-of-the-art snowmaking equipment, which allows Big Boulder, as well as her companion mountain Jack Frost (located 6 miles away), to survive less than perfect winters.

With a small vertical drop, Big Brother's 15 slopes and 8 lifts provide a great stomping ground for beginners and families with young children. Small and cozy, with 55 acres of skiable area, Big Boulder is small enough for you to get to know all the other winter athletes. Getting lost here is not an option, as all trails eventually lead you back to the base area.

Although separate resorts, Jack Frost and Big Boulder offer an interchangeable lift ticket and, together, offer a full range of ski slope levels and activities to entertain all ages. Weather permitting, the ski season runs from December to March and the runs are open until 10:00pm with 100% night skiing. A variety of discounts are available: Military Appreciation Discount (for soldiers and their spouses), College Night on Wednesdays and Family Night on Sundays. The majority of these discounts cut ticket prices in half, making them definitely worthwhile.

In recent years, Big Boulder has invested great resources in devoting nearly 50% of its overall terrain for park features. Following its recent revamping, its large terrain park now has over 8 jibs and 5 hits along with a progressive park for those beginner snowboarders and freestlyers looking to practice their moves. It also has a rookie park which is a mirror image of the larger terrain park. The mountain's halfpipe measures in at over 400 feet, and with the access to roam on all the slopes, snowboarders will be bored on this side of the mountain.

For those looking for a little time off their feet, Big Boulder has its own tubing park with 12 single chutes, a double chute, and a family area with five of its own lifts. To make life easier, Big Boulder has also installed a 600 foot conveyer carpet to transport snow tubers up the hill. Big Boulder also provides activities for those looking for a calmer way to use skis, with three kilometers of cross country trails.

You won't need to look far to find a place to stay but, due to "The Big Two's" popularity, you may want to book in advance to ensure availability. The area offers a range of lodging options including townhomes, condominiums, and single-family homes which allow for lodging right by the slopes. There are also a wide variety of motels within a 10-mile radius of the mountain, many of which offer a view of Big Boulder Lake. Most of the slopeside lodgings allow guests to whip up their own meals, but those interested in an evening out will find a lively restaurant scene in nearby Tannersville.
