Our Museum Expert Says:

Where can you find the world's oldest wine jar, third largest Sphinx, and largest cloisonné Foo lions? Come dazzle your eyes and expand your mind at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology, located on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia.

Since the 1800s, the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology has collected nearly one million objects, many obtained directly through its own field excavations or anthropological research. The museum's three spacious floors feature artifacts from Mesopotamia, the Bible Lands, Mesoamerica, Asia and the ancient Mediterranean World, as well as artifacts from native peoples of the Americas, Africa and Polynesia. This museum houses a world tour's worth of history!

Special exhibitions, drawn from both the museum's own collections and brought in on loan, enrich the experience the museum has to offer. In addition to its exhibits, the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology offers a wide variety of events including concerts, dance performances, films, lectures and special symposia. Guided gallery tours begin at the Main Entrance most Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30 p.m. from mid-September through mid-May. Many of the people who staff the museum are retired volunteer professors, archaeological students or history buffs, so take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions.
