Our Museum Expert Says:

Money, money, money! That's what it's all about at the U.S. Mint museum in Philadelphia. This iconic site is full of history and activities revolving around the making of those billions of little coins that make the world go round.

The Philadelphia branch is the oldest of the three branches of the Mint, having opened in 1792 with the name, "Ye Olde Mint," and the museum here provides a fascinating experience for visitors of all ages. The entire family will love watching and learning about the mechanized coinage operation, which turns out 1.5 million coins per hour and is explained by signs and recordings along the free, self-guided tour which lasts about 45 minutes. Besides learning about coin blanking, annealing, and washing, be sure to check out the lobby walls which display beautiful Tiffany mosaics telling the story of how coins were made in ancient times, as well as the gold coins and artifacts in the Rittenhouse Room. And before you take off, be sure to drop in at the Gift Shop, which has cool coins sets and collectables that kids will love.

The museum is accessible by SEPTA which stops one block away at 5th and Market St and by PATCO which stops at 8th and Market. Get yourself ready to create memories of a Mint experience you'll be sure to remember for years to come!
