As Philadelphia's only centre devoted to the promotion of ceramic arts, The Clay Studio is a nonprofit educational institute delivering stellar works from a variety of enthusiastic young artists. Founded in 1974 by five artists in need of workspace, The Clay Studio is a stepping stone for those fresh out of art school, and serves as prime ground for growth that will allow many to flourish.
Today, 40 artists occupy the studios and there are temporary exhibits featuring the artists' latest works. All the items are for sale and are reasonably priced. You can find things like decorative plates, pitchers and items that are simply indescribable.
Perhaps the best way to visit The Clay Studio is by taking a guided tour which you need to book two weeks in advance. You tour takes you round the entire facility including galleries, the school and studio spaces. You will enjoy artists' demonstrations and the use of a potter's wheel. You will witness the vast range of styles, skills and artists the studio has to offer.
Access The Clay Studio by taking the Market-Frankford El to 2nd Street exit (2nd and Market Streets). Alternatively, SEPTA buses # 33, 17 and 48 all stop at 2nd and Market. Walk 2 blocks north on 2nd to 139 N. 2nd Street (between Arch & Race). From I-95, exit #22 and get into the right lane, then make a right onto Independence Hall/Calloway St. Make a left onto 4th St. and another left onto Race then make a right onto 2nd St. You'll see The Clay Studio on your left.
As Philadelphia's only nonprofit solely dedicated to the education and promotion of the ceramic arts, and as one of the world's leading institutions in the field, The Clay Studio offers a unique venue for arts enthusiasts.
