Sorry, the Museum of Scientific Discovery is closed. When it was open, it was one of the leading attractions in Harrisburg, PA. The exhibits were very much hands-on. Kids could build a fish, see giant cockroaches, understand how water is delivered to the city and much more. The Museum of Scientific Discovery lived up to its name with sections on Physics, Biology, Engineering, Electricity, Math and even Medicine. The museum was on the forefront of technology, explaining fiber optics well before most people had a fiber optics cable delivering video to their living room.
Visitors to the Harrisburg area will now have to entertain children elsewhere. But, not to worry, Hershey and the Amish are coming to the rescue. The Hershey area is one of the most family-friendly vacation spots in the country, certainly on the East Coast. Every kid in DC, New York and nearby knows to suggest Hershey when summer vacation comes around. Just being in Hershey is a kids dream, but make sure to spend time at the Hershey Amusement Park and at ZooAmerica. If there is a museum whose name invites kids to visit – the Hershey Museum would be it.
Kids will also enjoy just about everything in the Amish Country. Visit the museums, the farms for a unique experience – just don't expect to see much of the technology you would have seen in the science museum that you were looking for in the first place. If your travels take you to Washington, DC, the Smithsonian should give you all the science museum you are looking for.
