How would you like to step into a kitchen to find hundreds of live cockroaches crawling on the kitchen countertop? Or get up close to a working hive of honey bees? No need to fear, because as gruesome as it sounds, these arthropods can get nowhere near you because they are safely exhibited behind glass at the Insectarium, Philadelphia!
The Insectarium is a one-of-a-kind, all-bug museum. It holds the largest insect collection in the U.S. and boasts thousands of live and mounted insects. As Philadelphia's only insect collection, the Insectarium's interactive displays, movie-room, and special kids sections, make this museum an awesome, if not slightly gruesome, way to spend the day!
Since 1992, the Insectarium has been educating and thrilling visitors, especially children, who can learn about insects in a way that is fun and exciting. The museum houses live, exotic insects from all over the world, and teaches visitors how insects keep the world's ecosystems balanced.
Two floors of insects from all over the world are on display, as well as approximately 6,500 feet of Madagascar Hissing cockroaches, Mexican Red Leg tarantulas, emperor scorpions, Goliath beetles, Praying Mantises, centipedes, Thorny Devils, Human Face Stink Bugs, Velvet Ants, Carmel Crickets, and a worldwide butterfly collection. There's the Working Beehive exhibit (The bees get outside the building from a tube in the wall, but always come back!), a petting corner, Arachnid Alley, the insect scale, walking sticks galore, aquatic insects, and more! You'll also find hands-on puzzles, microscopes, a crawl-through spider-web made of bungee cords, and other fun interactive activities.
To get to the Insectarium, follow I95 North to Cottman Ave and follow Route 73 until Frankford Ave, where you'll make a right (or left if you came from the south) and follow 8046 Frankford Ave. You'll see the Insectarium on the left side between Rhawn St. and Welsh Road.
Come on in and spend the day exploring arthropods at the Insectarium. You won't believe the complexity of these small creatures!
