Visit an "iron plantation" that laid the foundations for America's iron and steel industry! Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site offers a great glimpse into the America of the industrial revolution era. The site's buildings include a real blast furnace and more than fifty of the structures here are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Explore the nearly 300,000 artifacts and archival items related to the site's history!
In addition to the blast furnace, visitors to Hopewell can explore a 30 foot water wheel, workers' quarters, a living farm, charcoal maker's hut and other fascinating aspects of industrialization. Stop in at the Visitors Center first, where the museum exhibits, bookstore, and audio-visual programs are housed. A one mile drive to historic Bethesda Church is another interesting way to enjoy the area, and everyone will love picking apples from the park's historic orchard. Nature lovers listen up: There are great opportunities to hike the park's many trails and a chance to take a self-guided walking tour of the historic furnace community. Definitely bring a picnic and lunch under the trees in the park's picnic area. Kids will love playing in the open spaces and visiting the animals on the farm. If you're here during the summer, don't miss the Living History Programs and Demonstrations and other great special events—also a great opportunity for kids!
